Instagram’s Built-In Reel Download Button: How It Works and Why It Adds a Watermark
Instagram added its own Download option for public reels, so for some reels you don’t need any other tool. But it comes with limits that confuse a lot of people: a watermark, missing buttons and reels that save without their music. Here’s how it actually works.
Where to find Instagram’s download option
- Open the reel in the Instagram app.
- Tap the share icon (paper plane) — or the ⋯ menu on some versions.
- Tap Download. The reel saves to your phone’s gallery or camera roll.
For your own reels, the same option is in the ⋯ menu on the reel (older versions call it Save to camera roll), and your own downloads don’t carry a watermark.
Why the download has a watermark
When you download someone else’s reel through Instagram, the video is stamped with the Instagram logo and the creator’s username. That’s deliberate: it keeps the creator credited wherever the clip ends up, and it discourages people from reposting other creators’ work as their own.
If you’re saving a reel for yourself, the watermark doesn’t matter. If you want a clean copy to repost, the right move is to ask the creator for the original file — see how to repost a reel with credit. Removing a creator’s watermark to repost their work is exactly the kind of use that leads to copyright takedowns.
Why the Download button is missing
If you don’t see the option, one of these is usually the reason:
- The account is private. Only reels from public accounts can be downloaded.
- The creator turned downloads off. Creators can disable downloads for all their reels.
- The reel uses licensed music. Some reels with commercial tracks can’t be downloaded, or download without the song, because Instagram’s music licences only cover playback inside the app.
- Your app is out of date, or the feature hasn’t reached your account or region yet. Update the app and check again.
- It’s a business account’s ad or a branded post, which can have different sharing rules.
For creators: how to stop people downloading your reels
If you don’t want your reels downloaded through Instagram:
- Go to your profile → ☰ menu → Settings and activity.
- Open Sharing and reuse (in some versions Sharing and remixes).
- Turn off Allow people to download your reels.
This setting covers Instagram’s own Download button. Anyone can still screen-record a public reel, so if a reel must not be copied at all, the only reliable option is to keep your account private.
Instagram’s download vs. a downloader like ReelSaver
| Instagram’s Download | ReelSaver | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs the app and a login | Yes | No — works in any browser |
| Watermark on other people’s reels | Yes | No — saves the file as Instagram serves it |
| Works on desktop | Not in the web version | Yes |
| Respects “downloads off” setting | Yes | Only public reels can be fetched |
| Audio-only option | No | Yes, when a separate audio track is available |
Whichever you use, the same rule applies: a downloaded copy is for your own content, content you have permission for, or private viewing. Our guide Is it legal to download Instagram reels? explains why.
