Instagram Reel Not Downloading? 8 Reasons and How to Fix Each One

By the ReelSaver team · Updated 13 October 2026

Most failed downloads come down to a handful of causes, and almost all of them are about the post itself rather than your phone. Work through this list from the top — the first three cover the large majority of cases.

1. The account is private

What you’ll see: “Couldn’t fetch that post. It may be private, deleted, or the link may be mistyped.”

Downloaders — ReelSaver included — can only see what a logged-out visitor can see. Content from private accounts is visible only to approved followers, so no legitimate tool can fetch it.

Quick test: open the link in a private/incognito browser window where you’re not logged in to Instagram. If you see a login wall or “This account is private”, the post can’t be downloaded. Fix: if it’s your own post, temporarily switch your account to public, download, then switch back; otherwise, ask the owner to send you the file.

2. The post was deleted or archived

If the creator deleted or archived the reel, the link stops working everywhere — Instagram shows “Sorry, this page isn’t available.” There’s no way to recover it through a downloader. If it’s yours, check Your activity → Recently deleted in the app (items stay there for 30 days) or your Archive.

3. The link is incomplete or isn’t a post link

What you’ll see: “That doesn’t look like an Instagram link.”

Use the Copy link option from the share menu rather than copying from the address bar of an app or a messaging preview. A working link looks like one of these:

A link to a profile (instagram.com/username) isn’t a downloadable post. Extra tracking text after a question mark (?igsh=…) is fine — you don’t need to remove it.

4. The story has expired

What you’ll see: “This story couldn’t be fetched… it may have expired, be private, or already be gone.”

Stories disappear 24 hours after they’re posted unless the creator saves them to a Highlight. Download stories while they’re live, and copy the link to the specific story rather than to the profile. Story fetching is also less reliable than reels in general, because Instagram restricts stories more heavily.

5. Instagram is limiting requests

What you’ll see: “Instagram is temporarily limiting requests” or “Too many requests.”

Instagram limits how quickly any service can fetch content. If many people are downloading at once — or you’ve pasted lots of links in quick succession — you may hit that limit. Fix: wait a minute and try again. Retrying immediately and repeatedly only keeps the limit in place longer.

6. The reel is age-restricted or region-restricted

Some reels are only shown to logged-in adults, or only in certain countries. Those posts behave like private ones for a logged-out visitor, so they can’t be fetched. If the incognito test from step 1 shows a login prompt for a public account’s reel, this is usually why.

7. It downloaded, but you can’t find the file

This is the most common “it didn’t work” report that actually did work:

8. The video has no sound or looks low quality

ReelSaver always saves the version with the audio track included. If a reel downloads silently, the creator may have muted it, or the sound was removed by Instagram for copyright reasons — check whether it plays with sound on Instagram itself. Quality is capped at what Instagram serves; if the creator uploaded at low quality, the download will be low quality too. Our reel quality guide explains why.

Still stuck?

If a public post opens fine in a logged-out browser but still won’t download after a few minutes, it may be a bug on our side. Contact us with the link, your device and browser, and the exact error message — that helps us fix it quickly.
