How to Save, Use and Download Audio From an Instagram Reel

By the ReelSaver team · Updated 13 October 2026

A great sound is half of what makes a reel work. Instagram gives you several ways to grab the audio from a reel you like — and one rule about music licensing that every creator and business account needs to know.

Find out what song a reel is using

The audio label at the bottom of the reel shows the track name and artist. Tap it to open the audio page, which shows the full title, how many reels use it, and the reels themselves. If the label says “Original audio”, the sound was recorded by the creator or is a clip someone uploaded — the song may still be identifiable with Shazam or Google’s “Search a song” feature while the reel plays.

Save a sound for later

  1. Tap the audio label at the bottom of the reel.
  2. Tap Save audio (the bookmark icon) on the audio page.
  3. Find it later in your profile → ☰ menu → Saved → Audio, or in the Saved tab of the music picker when you create a reel.

Use a reel’s audio in your own reel

  1. Open the audio page by tapping the audio label.
  2. Tap Use audio. The camera opens with the sound attached.
  3. Record or add clips, then adjust which part of the sound plays in the audio editor.

Your reel is then listed on that audio’s page, which is one way new viewers discover it. Using a trending sound early, while the count is still growing, tends to give the biggest boost.

Download the audio as a file

Instagram doesn’t let you export audio on its own. If you need the sound as a file — for example to edit your own reel in another app — you can download it with ReelSaver:

  1. Copy the reel link — share icon → Copy link.
  2. Paste it into ReelSaver and fetch the reel.
  3. Tap Audio on the result to save the sound as an M4A file. The button appears when Instagram provides a separate audio track for that reel; otherwise, download the video — it includes the sound.

M4A plays on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, and imports into CapCut, InShot, VN, Premiere and most other editors.

The music-licensing rule you need to know

Instagram licenses commercial music for use inside Instagram. Downloading a song from a reel doesn’t give you the right to use it anywhere else.

Downloading audio is ideal for your own sounds, for offline listening, and for editing a reel that you’ll post back to Instagram with the licensed track re-added through the app. For more on where the legal lines are, see Is it legal to download Instagram reels?

Common problems

“This audio isn’t available” when I tap Use audio

The track may be unavailable in your country, restricted for business accounts, or removed by the rights holder. Try switching to a personal or creator account, or choose a different sound.

The reel plays without music after downloading

Instagram sometimes removes licensed music from a reel after a copyright claim. If the reel is silent on Instagram too, the music is gone at the source.
